The Santa Cruz Warriors topped the Austin Spurs, 101-94, at H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, Texas, to wrap up their five-game road trip with a 3-2 record on Wednesday night.
The Warriors return to action at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Sunday at 12:30 p.m., when they host the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (13-9) in their annual game on the Golden State Warriors’ home court.
Santa Cruz (14-11), tied for sixth place in the Western Conference with the Texas Legends (14-11), are three games behind conference leader Sioux Falls (17-8) with nine games left in the regular season.
Two-way guard Pat Spencer and forward Javonte Green came off the bench to lead the Warriors. Spencer had 20 points and seven rebounds, and Green had 19 points and seven rebounds.
Guard Donovan Williams had 16 points and five rebounds for Santa Cruz, and guard Yuri Collins added 12 points off the bench.
Center Amida Brimah had seven points, eight rebounds, and five blocks. He has 344 career blocks, three shy of breaking the all-time G League record held by Raphiael Putney (346).
Two-way guard David Duke Jr. had 25 points, six rebounds, and five assists to lead the Spurs (12-11). Guard Sidy Cissoko, on assignment from the San Antonio Spurs, scored 18 points off the bench, and newly acquired two-way guard Jamaree Bouyea, a former standout at Palma School and University of San Francisco, notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in his first game with Austin.
Men’s surfing
Ron Jon Quiksilver Pro: Santa Cruz’s John Mel posted the highest two-wave heat score out of the 28 heats held Wednesday, the opening day of the World Surf League’s Ron Jon Quiksilver Pro, a 1,000-point Qualifying Series event at Shepard Beach Park in Cocoa Beach, Florida.
He produced wave scores of 7.25 and 9.50 for a 17.25 total to win Heat 11 in the Round of 64.
“I had two scores already and knew I would send it if I got an opportunity and I landed in the flats, which I think the judges liked,” said Mel, of his 9.50, in a post-heat interview with the WSL.
Mel competes in Heat 6 of the Round of 32 against Dimitri Poulos, Kyan Yang, and Lucas Owston.
Women’s basketball
All-Coast Conference: Cabrillo College’s Jade Crum was named first-team All-Coast Conference South Division for the 2023-24 season.
Crum, a freshman guard out of Milpitas, averaged 16 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists for the Seahawks (3-24, 0-12).
San Jose City’s Tatiana Collazo was named MVP after averaging 22 points per game, and the Jaguars’ Lauren Adamek was named College Coach of the Year.
Zara Dumatol, Maddie Diaz and Jada Nguyen were named to the first team for the conference champion Jaguars (26-4, 12-0), as were Mission’s Lali Montesino, a Watsonville alumna who averaged 20.5 points per game, and Alli Dioli.
Hartnell also had two players honored, Yasmine Garrett and Daeja Hollands, and Foothill’s Trezure Tu’ua, Monterey Peninsula’s Destiny Urzua rounded out the first team.
College baseball
Cabrillo 15, De Anza 11: Jacob Pappas and Seita Shiratori each had four of the Seahawks’ 18 hits in a nonconference win Tuesday.
Pappas had a walk, double, two RBI, and three runs scored. Shiratori had a walk, RBI, run scored and stole three bases.
Nicholas Madrigal and Nic Erickson each had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.
Winning pitcher Elliot Veisauyadra (1-2) gave up one run over three innings of middle relief.
High school baseball
Scotts Valley 7, Sacred Heart Prep 1: The Falcons used a four-run first inning to pave the way to their nonleague win Wednesday.
Blake LaRiviere had a single that plated Quinn Turowski in the first inning, and Jack Parker followed with a bases-loaded triple with two outs.
The Falcons tacked on two more runs in the second inning. They finished with nine hits. LaRiviere and Jack Abel both had two hits apiece.
Scotts Valley starting pitcher Corbin Giesen gave up one run and three hits over four innings. He struck out four batters and walked two. LaRiviere pitched three innings of relief. He struck out five batters and gave up two hits.
Harbor 4, at Prospect 2: Winning pitcher Colin Karwick struck out eight batters over 6 1/3 innings, as the Pirates prevailed in nonleague play Tuesday. He gave up four walks and one hit.
Ferris Vitali, Carlos Cruz and Colin Karwick each had a hit for the Pirates (3-1-1). Cruz hit an RBI double to drive in Vitali.
At Monterey 5, Monte Vista Christian 2: The Mustangs gave up three runs in the first inning and two in the seventh of their PCAL Gabilan Division loss Wednesday.
Johnny Money (1-0) earned the win and Jackson Everett (1) picked up the save. Dante Darnel took the loss.
High school softball
San Lorenzo Valley 4, Sobrato 2, 10 inn.: The Cougars scored twice in the top of the 10th inning to pull out the win in nonleague play Wednesday.
Boys swimming
PCS 83, Rancho San Juan 40: Finn Levy, Jack McNulty, and Leo Stiles-Strudley each won two individual events for the Pumas in their meet at Everett Alvarez High in Salinas on Wednesday.
Levy won the 200 free (2:06.59) and 500 free (5:45.38), McNulty won the 100 butterfly (1:04.60) and 100 backstroke (1:06.07), and Stiles-Strudley won the 200 individual medley (2:42.28) and 100 breaststroke (1:25.12).
Teammate Gabriel Dobson won the 100 free (1:07.69). The Pumas won the 200 medley relay (2:08.16), 200 free relay (2:01.62), and 400 free relay (4:28.63).
Girls swimming
PCS 85, Rancho San Juan 52: Finley Dobkin and Netta Wainshal each won two events in the Pumas’ win at Everett Alvarez High in Salinas on Wednesday.
Finley Dobkin won the 200 individual medley (2:39.32) and 500 free (6:29.06), and Wainshal won the 100 free (1:06.30) and 100 breaststroke (1:21.47). Teammate Nina Gramkowski in the 100 butterfly (1:11.97).
The PCS also placed first in the 200 medley relay (2:14.53) and 400 free relay (4:34.18).
Kirby’s Emely Knowles won the 200 free (2:26.19) and the 500 free (6:29.19) against RSJ.
