NEWBERRY, MI – A rustic campground at the meeting of two iconic Michigan waterways has been named one of the Midwest’s top places to camp in 2024.
The Dyrt, a camping resource with millions of user-generated reviews and photos, released its annual list this week naming the Mouth of Two Hearted River State Forest campground No. 3 in the Midwest.
“Camping is more of a year-round activity now than it’s ever been, but I still love May because it’s the traditional beginning of the camping season, and we get to unveil our annual lists of the Best Places to Camp in each region of the country,” said Sarah Smith, founder of The Dyrt.
“On this year’s lists we see private campgrounds that are working harder than ever to provide the amenities that campers desire these days, while also remaining true to the essence of providing an experience in nature. Free camping locations on some of the most naturally beautiful land in the country dominate this year’s lists as well. Congratulations to all the winners. Campers, update your bucket lists.”
The rankings are based on reviews and ratings from a vast community of campers. The Mouth of the Two Hearted River campground is the only Michigan spot on the list.
Located on the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the river mouth campground is connected to the lake by a pedestrian suspension bridge.
The North Country Trail runs right through the campground, and other hiking trails lace the surrounding dunes. There is a boat launch for kayaks and small boats, and the lake and river both are great for fishing.
Plentiful trees make the tent sites ideal for hammocks. Facilities are rustic — there are vault toilets and drinking water, and a fairly rough road getting here, but the breathtaking landscape also makes the drive a highlight.
Here are the Top 10 in the Midwest Region:
“There’s no concrete, one-size-fits-all definition as to what makes for a great camping experience,” says The Dyrt CEO Kevin Long. “There’s something for everyone in every region. These lists can also be an invitation to explore a new region. Now’s the time for all the people who have discovered camping in the past few years to really spread their wings and take their love of camping to the next level. Get on the road this summer and check these places out.”
Nearly 85 million Americans went camping in 2023, according to The Dyrt’s 2024 Camping Report.
